October 2020 is a significant month astrologically, in a year when every month brings peaks and troughs of varying degrees of intensity. Mars and Mercury, both retrograde in this time, bring warnings of illusion and challenge as the former vents his anger through tempestuous activity while his brother sows the seeds of uncertainty and deception, strong emotions and change.
Many of the characteristics of Mars are epitomised by Donald Trump, the loud, aggressive, unpredictable leader, and so it is unsurprising that this month when Mars dominates the night skies and solar energies that so much attention is focused on the American President as a result of his actions, behaviour and now vulnerability. Mercury meanwhile exaggerates and further confuses an already chaotic situation, the only certainty being that nothing will be the same again, and that change, perhaps dramatic, is inevitable.
While this applies directly to Donald Trump, it applies also to the USA more widely and its election which is due to take place on 3rd November, when Mars and Mercury are both retrograde still. Mercury begins to face forward from 4th November, but Mars will command the energies until 13th November, and so an overwhelming sense of emotional upheaval – perhaps grief and anger – and painful transformation will be the hallmark of a critical period for America and the world. The next few weeks will be ones of mirage, deception and disbelief, and our challenge will be to see fast-moving events calmly and clearly, not to be pulled into the extremes of judgment and hot feelings that may be exacerbated by Mars. Whatever happens in the US will impact us all, wherever we live for now.
Mars and Mercury, as they dance backwards, are encircling us, challenging us and spinning us around with blindfolds over our eyes. We cannot see where we are going and more and more we fear to believe what we are told about our present and our future. How safe is the promised COVID vaccine? What really keeps our communities protected? Is the scientific data accurate? Who can we trust? Who is to blame? Who really cares? What about the Planet?
Illusion and challenge are everywhere, and as we watch extraordinary public happenings that are puzzling and concerning, our own lives may reflect the external sense of upheaval and uncertainty that is so prominent everywhere. It helps to remember that beyond the present chaos Mars is ushering in a new era of wise, calm leadership with the best qualities of the First Ray, and that Mercury is bringing, through his games, transformation and deep and healing feelings of peace.
For both Mars and Mercury, communication is important. It helps for each of us to listen carefully to find the truth, and to speak without anger or hasty judgment. There is much we do not know and cannot see yet, but the blindfolds will come off soon.
