Technology taking us back to Atlantis

The early morning news today was dominated by reports about a drive by the UK government to impose the use of GM crops on the EU; a major summit of leading scientists in London to try to resolve the dangerous and growing failure of antibiotics to treat disease through new inventions; and continuing questions over the secret use of technology to invade privacy. I was reminded of Atlantis.

Prism and Privacy, and the Scramble for Denial

Since Edward Snowden’s revelations about the nature and extent of the Prism spying project in the US and elsewhere, the denials of wrongdoing and the airy justification of the need for it have become clamorous from government insiders on both sides of the Atlantic. There is a phrase from Hamlet which sums it up: “The lady doth protest too much, methinks”.
